Garden Trail Weekend at Westleton. Opening
times are between 2 pm and 5 pm. Some of Westleton’s
loveliest village gardens will be opening their gates on
these days. An entrance ticket of just £2.50 per person,
on sale at St Peter’s Church on each day, gives admission
to all the gardens, which are within easy walking distance.
All the proceeds go towards St Peter’s KEY CHANGE
appeal – an ambitious project to refurbish the West
End of the Church with modern facilities and a rebuilt and
relocated organ. Westleton is one of Suffolk’s best-loved
villages. Its 650-year-old thatched church attracts more
than 3,000 visitors every year and is already renowned as
the setting for the annual Westleton Wild Flower Festival
at the end of July. The Garden Trail promises to be a fantastic
afternoon out, with plant sales, a cake stall, cream teas
at the Church and a special garden flower display in the
chancel. For more information about the Westleton KEY CHANGE
project and about the many events and concerts planned for

‘Balance’ – The Bergh Apton Sculpture
Trail 2008. Gardens will be open 10.30 am–6
pm. The 5th Bergh Apton Sculpture Trail, set in a small
south Norfolk village, has had its doors open since 24th/25th
May; the 7th/8th June is its last weekend. Internationally
renowned, the Sculpture Trail offers an exciting opportunity
to view important works exhibited in 12 rarely accessible
private gardens. Over 60 sculptors will exhibit more than
200 works responding to the theme of how we balance our
needs responsibly and ethically with those of nature. Important
East Anglian and international artists have been invited
to exhibit. These include Christopher Le Brun, Katherine
Dowson, Zoe Rubens, Gary Breeze, John Bardell, and Liz McGowan.
For the first time, Zimbabwean Shona sculptures will be
included as part of their nationwide tour. Christopher le
Brun, who has a studio near Woodbridge, will exhibit for
the first time. Le Brun was elected to the Royal Academy
in 1996 and became the Academy’s first Professor of
Drawing. He is one of five artists shortlisted for the Ebbsfleet
Landmark commission, which will greet Eurostar travellers
on arrival to the new international terminal. Zoe Rubens,
local Ipswich artist and sculptor, has been commissioned
by The Sunday Times to create the Best Green Business Award.
She uses a variety of media, including recycled materials,
to create both exciting and beautiful structures. Other
local artists include Jocelyn Magnus, Ben Platts-Mills,
Mark Goldsworthy, Paul Richardson, Brian Alabaster, Tom
Joynes, Lawrence Edwards, Stuart Anderson, Lucy Unwin, Rosemary
Elliott, Patrick Elder, Alan Foxley and Ursula Ströh-Rubens.
Many works will be for sale, with prices ranging from as
low as £50. Music, storytelling, stone carving, and
creative workshops will be occurring within the gardens.
Food, drink and ice cream are available. Bergh Apton is
situated six miles southeast of Norwich off the A146 Norwich–Lowestoft
Road. The car park will be reached via Thurton off the A146,
with limited parking at the Church and disabled parking
at the Village Hall. To make the event more enjoyable for
all, it will be a walking and cycling trail, with transport
provided for the less mobile. Cost: £10 for one day
or £15 for two days; children under 16 are free; concessions
for South Norfolk Leisure Passport holders. Telephone 01508
