Farewell Pope and Andrews
It was the end of an era at Reydon High School in Sole Bay
Senior’s final game of the season against Wymondham
Town Tuesday night (22nd April).
After two seasons in charge of the First Team, formally
Southwold Town and now Solebay United, Richard Pope and
Gary Andrews have resigned as Managers with a fair amount
of success along the way in keeping Solebay in senior football
with a limited squad and not the support this role deserved
with the work involved.
With more than ten years’ experience as a player and
Manager, I would like to thank Gary Andrews my joint Manager
for the past two seasons for his support and commitment
on and off the field The former Lowestoft Town and Leiston
player has been an inspiration to the Solebay players to
keep them where they are today in senior football, and will
be sorely missed in the dressing room and on the touchline.
I would like to say a few ‘thank yous’ to former
Chairman David Vaughan and current Captain Matthew Barbrook
for all the support they have gave us along the way, along
with current Chairman Barry Remblance and all the few active
committee members – John Pigneguy, Peter and Annette
Mace, Mike Julings, Sean Peck, Trevor Clifford, Jason Wright,
John Roffe, Terry Smith and former linesman John Wells.
Last of all, a big ‘thank you’ to all the players
for their commitment over the last two seasons and I hope
we have left a platform for Solebay to continue in their
senior status with the prospect of a good developing youth
policy and build for the future.
Tuesday night’s game finished in a 4–2 defeat,
but there were many plus points to come out of the game
– three 16-year-olds took to the field and showed
the club’s youth policy working to the full, with
Man of the Match David Tarawali scoring two, showing what
a talent he will be in the future.

Christmas Lights: keeping the momentum going
The Quiz night in April was well attended and our many
thanks go to Rod Hilton for setting the questions and acting
as quizmaster with his usual humour and aplomb. Marcus Gladwell
very kindly donated the first prize of four tickets for
a trip on the Coastal Voyager, which was won by The Red
Lion team, and The Red Lion kindly donated the second prize
of vouchers for a meal at the pub, which was won by The
Entertainers. Our thanks to both donors for their generosity
and support. The event raised £472.

Much to report from
Southwold Primary School
The Friends of Southwold Primary School held a cake stall
on Saturday 19th April on a bitterly cold morning –
the wind seemed to blow right through the helpers and sent
some of the meringues down to South Green! Despite the miserable
weather, we managed to raise a magnificent total of over £400.
Our grateful thanks to all those who helped on the morning
and those who made cakes. Especial thanks to those who turned
up on the morning with wonderful donations – you know
who you are and thank you.
There was a big welcome back for Miss Cashell, who returned
from maternity leave after the birth of her son Oscar last
year. For those of you walking past the playground who wonder
what the large wooden slats are, they are used as goalposts!
There has been the usual flurry of school trips this term,
with the younger classes going to a ‘Wake and Shake’
session at Halesworth Middle School. They also had a wonderful
day out at Bewilderwood, the adventure playground in Norfolk.
The older classes had a day trip to the Farm Fair at the Suffolk
Showground.
Years 3 and 4 had a fantastic weekend away at the Aylmerton
Field Study Centre in north Norfolk last month. They were
kept very busy with an itinerary including ferry trips to
see the seals near Blakeney, a visit to a swimming complex
and the chance to handle different animals, including a large
boa constrictor – this seemed to be the highlight for
most of the children, but not all! The parents would like
to thank Richard Turner, Chris Dawson and Anna Bedford for
their care and patience over a long and busy weekend.
The Year 4s are finishing off a busy term with four weeks
of cycling training, as well as a taster session of golf at
Halesworth Golf Club. They will also be going for their transfer
day at Halesworth Middle School. We are having a rounders
evening on the Common and then the annual summer disco –
the end of the school year approaches fast.
If you are interested in sending your child to Southwold Primary
School, the Headmaster Richard Turner and his staff would
be happy to answer any queries. Please contact us on 01502
723137.

Good
news for the local NSPCC
The generosity of visitors enjoying the Bank Holiday Monday
sunshine on Southwold Pier – and an extra bit of help
from the pier’s owner Stephen Bournes – has
raised £1,000 for the NSPCC. Stephen Bournes not only
allowed the Southwold and Reydon Branch to collect on the
Pier all day, but, when he discovered visitors had donated
an amazing £730, decided to ‘top up’ the
takings with an additional donation to bring the day’s
total up to £1,000. This makes the day’s collection
the biggest fund-raising event of the year for the Southwold
and Reydon NSPCC Branch, which sends its many thanks to
Mr Bournes.
