EXTRA EXTRA

STOP PRESS

The following are contributions gratefully received that unfortunately arrived too late to go in the September print issue of the Southwold Organ, but will be old hat by the time the next (October) issue comes out:

Community project

For many years, the Southwold seafront railings have been in a very poor condition. Funding has been asked many times from Suffolk County Council (SCC) to rub down and paint them, but at the time there had been no budget available.

Cllr Tobin had asked Southwold Town Council to support him in asking if SCC would engage in a community project, which they did. SCC has agreed to supply all materials, insurance, fencing etc. The local community is to carry out the work in keeping the high standard of our town that we have all come to expect.

The project starts on Wednesday, 8th September 2010.

Meet at the seafront toilets at 10.00 am (a trial section will be undertaken for Southwold Town Council and SCC to view).

Would all interested parties, clubs, groups, business and individuals who would like to take part please contact Cllr Simon Tobin (tel: 07796 402519 or 01502 725153).

This will be a fun project with social events happening during it, but you really will be making a difference as a community.

If an agreement is given, there will be a permanent sign put up by the railings of who worked on them.

Southwold, Reydon and Wrentham Conservative Branch

The Southwold, Reydon and Wrentham Conservative Branch are holding a film night (East Anglia and a comedy). Wine and burgers.

Date: Wednesday 15th September, 6.00 for 6.30 pm.

Venue care of Mr Ted Richardson, 17 Park Lane, Southwold.

Information from Mrs Carol Scriven (tel: 01502 578268) or Mr Simon Tobin (Tel: 07796 402519).

Limited numbers, so book early.

St Margaret’s Church, Reydon

Sunday, 26th September is designated ‘Back to Church Sunday’ and St Margaret’s is joining churches throughout the UK in this initiative. We’ll be focusing on extending an even warmer welcome to encourage people to come back to church-or to try it for the first time.

Our services on 26th September will be at 8 am and 9.30 am – with coffee and cake after the 9.30 service.

This year, we will retell the story of Zacchaeus, a vertically challenged man who climbed a tree so that he could get a glimpse of Jesus over the heads of the crowd. To his amazement, Jesus invited himself to dinner and, for Zacchaeus, life changed forever.

Reverend Rich Henderson, Vicar of Reydon, extends his own invitation: ‘If you used to go to Church, or even if you’ve never been to a service and are curious about what goes on, we’d love to welcome you on Back to Church Sunday.’

HARVEST FESTIVAL

Our Harvest Eucharist will be on Sunday, 3rd October at 6 pm.

The theme will be – We are blessed to be a blessing.

This year, our harvest offering will be a special collection supporting Christian Aid’s Pakistan floods appeal.

Your donations will help make a difference to the people of Pakistan whose homes and livelihoods have been destroyed in what the UN is describing as the worst natural disaster since the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Christian Aid gift aid envelopes will be available in church from Sunday, 26th September.

From Tuesday, 14th September, there will be a midweek Eucharist at St Margaret’s Church, Reydon. This will be a said Common Worship service at 6.30 pm each Tuesday. On the third Tuesday, the service will be a Healing Eucharist with the laying on of hands and anointing.

For more details, contact Revd Rich Henderson (tel: 01502 722192).

Lowestoft and Waveney Alzheimer’s Society news

On Saturday, 21st August, over 100 people gathered at the Stella Peskett Memorial Hall, Southwold for ‘An Audience with Geoffrey Munn’, a fundraising event for the Lowestoft and Waveney Alzheimer’s Society. Best known as one of the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow experts, Geoffrey kept everyone enthralled with his talk on the ‘Personal Jewels of Queen Victoria’.

Marvelling at the jewellery designs and the tales connected with them, guests took advantage of the opportunity to speak with Geoffrey, who had also donated a fantastic prize of a tour for two of Wartski, the court jewellers, followed by lunch at the historic Garrick Club.

Attracting interest from all over the country, the lucky prize-draw winner was Jean Austin from Oulton Broad, who commented: ‘I have never won anything before.’

A spokesperson from Alzheimer’s Society said: ‘We would like to thank Geoffrey for his generosity and help in raising an amazing £2,000, which will support local people affected by dementia, as well as increasing awareness of the work the team at the Lowestoft and Waveney office undertake in the community.’

For more information about services available, please contact Lowestoft and Waveney Alzheimer’s office on 01502 514712 or e-mail lowestoftandwaveney@alzheimers.org.uk.

Southwold premiere joy for Suffolk filmmaker

Ipswich-born film maker Frances Harper, who started her career producing documentaries just three years ago with a camcorder, has had her first-ever film, which she both produced and directed, premiered in Suffolk.

Southwold – Having a Wonderful Time was shown at the Electric Picture Palace Cinema in Southwold on the evening of Saturday, 21st August. The evening was a sell out and the film received some excellent reviews.

Frances, who now lives in Melton, near Woodbridge, has produced and directed the film, which charts Southwold’s history, its outstanding characteristics that attract thousands of holidaymakers each year, and features interviews with interesting Southwold characters, including Jill Freud, and representatives from Adnams and the Lifeboat Museum.

On the making of the film, Frances commented: ‘I love Southwold, so to be given the chance to make this film has allowed me to indulge in two of my passions, filmmaking and Southwold. The film shows just why the town is so popular with holidaymakers, and also why people love living there. It shows the quirky and fun side of the town, but also looks at the community spirit that is so prevalent there, as well as well known figures and events throughout its history.’

John Bennett, Manager of the Southwold Electric Picture Palace cinema, added: ‘We are always keen to support local film makers, and we were delighted to be able to exclusively screen the premier of Southwold – Having a Wonderful Time here in Southwold.’

Frances, who is 63 years old, started her television career producing documentaries just two years ago with a camcorder. Frances’ first TV documentary, Where Angels Fear to Tread, about the life of Ipswich prostitute ‘Lou’ who had known the five girls murdered by Steve Wright was broadcast on the BBC.

Her second documentary, My Son, Drugs and Me, was the heart-rending story of two families, one of which was from Ipswich, coping with drug-addict sons. During the summer of 2009, Frances produced a short film called A Whiter Shade of Pale, which collated the views of local residents in the Suffolk seaside town of Southwold about plans for a naturist’s beach.

The film will be available to purchase from the Electric Picture Palace Cinema in Southwold from the end of August for £10, as well as from Jarrolds in Norwich, and in selected venues in Woodbridge and the surrounding areas. Alternatively, contact Frances directly on 01394 385560 or f.harper2@btinternet.com to reserve your copy.

‘thirty-one’ – a new installation by composer Stuart Stevens, commissioned by Aldeburgh Music

Following on from the success of his ‘Waterfront Gamelan’, a percussion ensemble created from scrap metal which paraded along the Ipswich Waterfront as part of Ip-Art 2010 in June this year, Ipswich-based composer Stuart Stevens has been commissioned by Aldeburgh Music to create a massive, out-sized percussion installation. The instrument will consist of 63 2-inch aluminium chimes suspended from the rafters of the Hoffman Building, Snape Maltings. It will occupy a space some 9ft high by 18ft wide!

‘The chimes are tuned in a way that creates many more notes in an octave than we commonly encounter in Western music’ commented Stevens. ‘The piece written for the instrument, called Genus 1, requires five performers to play it, each with two wooden mallets.’

The world premiere of the piece will be at 11 am on Saturday, 25th September, with further performances throughout that weekend. Councillor Jane Chambers, the Mayor of Ipswich, who has herself commissioned pieces from Stevens, will be among the special guests at the premiere.

The installation forms part of a range of musical offerings that weekend by Aldeburgh Music, alongside the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival, including top-class performances from Aldeburgh young musicians and the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra. The ‘thirty-one’ installation and performances of ‘Genus 1’ are free, though there is a £5 admission charge to the Food and Drink event. It will then be left installed for the following week and people are invited to try playing it for themselves.

Dates

Premiere performance: 11 am, Saturday, 25th September.

25th–26th September: open 10 am–5 pm. Please note: Although this event is free, an admission charge of £5 applies during the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival.

From 27th September: open daily 12 noon–5 pm (12 noon–7.30 pm on 1st October).
